Chopin’s Music Medicine

Chopin’s music medicine,

the acupressure of his fingers

pressing down on a piano,

his upright seating allieved his rasping lungs,

delicately physically feeling poetic vibrations flowing soft harmonies

inside intimate spaces, rather than inside large concert halls.

He self-made self-created his medicine music to help him feel as physically comfortable as possible.
It massaged and self-medicated his body

with sonatas, etudes, waltzes and nocturnes,

with the life he lived dying.

His music was his hospice.
His comfort.
His gift to the world.

He gave us a medicine free of side effects,

and that lovingly and kindly works.

Deborah Marchant’s poem beautifully weaves together biography, metaphor, and observation to honor Chopin’s music as both personal comfort and universal remedy. The poem suggests that out of suffering, something lasting and healing can be made—not just for the artist, but for the world. Chopin’s “medicine” lives on, its effects both immediate and historic, a free gift with the power “that lovingly and kindly works
