gave up kicking high an hour ago
and sat down.
The kicking isn’t working.
Her team is still losing.
She picked her jacket
up from the bench
and left.
30,000 in the bleachers gasped.
The lead cheerleader stomped her feet.
One team player shouted,
”GO TO HELL!”
Then one, then another player
and another
followed and left,
violently shaking their fists in the air.
Then swaths of fans stood up
and left, cursing.
For us still left, feeling amazed,
some scratching our heads
wondering what just happened,
we witnessed a slowly growing change
in what seemed to be
the stadium lighting.
The entire field began to glow and shimmer.
We all calmly began glowing.
We held out our arms, hands and fingers,
turning looking at them this way and that way, glimmering.
Then we saw
the players on the other side
laughing.
Their cheerleaders fell over
laughing.
We were all laughing.
I fell over
onto the glowing guy
sitting next to me, he fell over
glowing me.
Then players on our side still here
held onto each other, belly laughing.
Then the coaches ran over
to each other, laughing laughing
laughing and laughing.
